Save Energy By Using Underfloor Heating
By comparison with radiator heating UFH can reduce energy requirements while maintaining the same comfort level. Its compatibility with low temperature water allows full advantage to be made of modern condensing boilers, and makes the use of heat pumps more beneficial
How Underfloor Heating Works
UFH operates at lower temperatures than conventional forms of heating and is still able to heat areas comfortably. It achieves this by heating a much larger surface area which in turn provides the capability to create an overall much more efficient heating system, this enables savings to be made on running costs and eliminates dependency on the diminishing reserves of fossil fuels.
Underfloor heating transfers energy largely by radiation. Pipes are embedded in the floor structure and these circulate warm water. This warms the floor surface and creates a large surface area heater. Generally, in a new building, the floor surface must be warmed to 25-27C, which is about the same temperature as the palm of the hand, and much cooler than 37.4C body temperature.
With floor surface at 25C and room air at 20C, a heated floor will provide about 53W/m2, which is typically the power needed to heat a new building. The power requirement ranges from about 35W/m2 to 75W/m2. If 75W/m2 is required, the floor surface temperature needs to be increased by only 2C, to 27C.
Comfort
Warmth from the floor radiates evenly and gently upwards for ideal comfort. No wall-hung radiators, sharp edges or very hot surfaces. Just a warm floor for warm feet and a cooler ceiling for a cool head.
Control
Can be adapted easily to work with other heating methods about the house, such as multiple boilers, radiator circuits and standard or pressurised hot water. Intelligent/self-learning controls can improve the response times
Environment
Accurate temperature control achieves significant energy conservation. Not only is this less expensive for you, it's also far more environmentally friendly. Ideal for use with heat pumps or condensing boilers (because lower temperature water circulation is required)
